THE PURPOSE OF REAL CHANGE CLT

WHAT

is panhandling?

Panhandling is the practice of asking strangers for money, food, or other items of value in public or private places.

How

to respond to panhandlers

  1. Acknowledge and Don’t Ignore
Make eye contact or offer a nod. People who are panhandling are human beings in difficult circumstances. If you are asked for money, etc. simply say, “I prefer not to give right now” or “Sorry, I don’t have anything.” It is important that you say something and don’t ignore them.

  2. Volunteer and Support
There are great organizations that are committed to providing resources and aid to vulnerable individuals. Consider donating to a local charity or organization or volunteering your time to help at a local shelter or food bank.

  3. Be Aware
It is important that you are aware of your surroundings. If something feels off or makes you uncomfortable, trust your gut and try to leave the situation quickly. If the situation cannot be avoided, please contact your local law enforcement.

WHY

Is it important to give funds to organizations that provide resources?

We want to assist people in need, but giving money directly to panhandlers is a short-term solution and can sometimes make the situation worse. It is important to refer individuals in crisis to agencies and organizations who are focused on crisis intervention like food and clothing and systemic solutions like housing, mental health, and rent assistance.

Human services professionals agree that giving money to individuals on the street does not end their crisis.
